I am often asked the following question: "Emily! How did you become a Hypnotherapist? What made you choose such an interesting and unusual profession?"
So for those of you who want to know the answer, here's my story...
My interest in hypnotherapy began in 2009 when I sought treatment myself with leading Lesserian™ Curative Hypnotherapist Helen Lesser to help me to stop smoking. From that moment on I began researching more and more into this advanced form of hypnotherapy that had already proved to have such a profound and positive impact on my life. I began asking myself a question – could Lesserian™ Curative Hypnotherapy also provide exactly the career and vocation I had been looking for?
Whilst we just let that question simmer for a few moments (you've probably guessed the answer anyway!), let me fill you in on the background that led up to it. My career path before this point had taken me on a varied journey, starting at The University of Birmingham in 2005 with a successful masters degree and the tentative beginnings of a PhD in English Literature. A lifelong love of books (and the perceived prestige of a doctorate) had long been fuelling my lofty dreams of a future in academia. But whilst my brain and ego were satisfied with this plan, my heart wasn't really in it (just ask my supervisor!). This heady academic future I had envisaged for myself was not fully 'me'.
At this point, my heart took over from my head and led me towards my second passion as I began exploring a possible career in counselling. After initially training at Newman University, I soon began working as a Drug and Alcohol Practitioner for a leading UK charity. I greatly enjoyed my work with individuals and with groups, every day finding myself inspired by both the beauty and the difficulties of the human mind. But something was still missing. Whilst my heart was happy working directly with people each day, my brain was bored by the seemingly endless parade of paperwork and other restrictions that were detracting from what I really liked about the job (the people!).
Surely there had to be something out there that was more fully 'me' than this? Something that reconciled both head and heart?
And so we're back full circle to that question again: could Lesserian™ Curative Hypnotherapy be the profession that does exactly that? That satisfies both head and heart and everything that is intrinsically 'me'? As I began researching Lesserian™ Curative Hypnotherapy, the answer was becoming increasingly more obvious – a big resounding YES!
I began studying with Helen Lesser at The Hypnotherapy Training College in 2011 and have been a practicing and registered Lesserian™ Curative Hypnotherapist since qualifying in 2012. Since then I have gone on to work as a Teaching Assistant at The Hypnotherapy Training College, assisting with the autumn 2014 practical course. I am also currently training to be an examiner with The Curative Hypnotherapy Examination Committee and am a frequent author of articles for the College's 'Knowledge Base', an online compendium of resources for professional Lesserian™ therapists.
In 2013 I moved to Worcestershire where I was fortunate enough to join a leading local therapy centre (The Centre for Wellbeing) and have the opportunity to work alongside other therapy professionals. Following this initial success in Worcestershire, I moved to my own premises (although I still enjoy the benefits and expertise of a wide network of therapy colleagues) and I now run a successful full-time practice from my private treatment room in Malvern. I am happy to have finally found 'me' and, most importantly, to be helping others do the same.
I look forward to meeting you.
